Happy Hindu New Year
The first day of the Hindu New Year, also known as Nav Samvatsar, is around the corner. For the uninitiated, it is celebrated on the Pratipada Tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Chaitra lunar month. Every year, the month of Chaitra marks the beginning of the New Year (which falls in March or April as per the Gregorian calendar). Also known as Vikram Samvat, the Hindu New Year is celebrated in the month of March or April every year.

The Hindu New Year for 2022 begins on 2nd April, also the first of the nine days of the Navratri festivities. During this nine-day celebration, devotees worship Goddess Durga in her different forms and manifestations. Local variations of the Hindu New Year, also known as the Solar New Year, are found in various parts of the world. In India too, it is celebrated under different names and themes in different states.

It Maharashtra, Gudi Padwa is a celebration celebrated to mark the beginning of the Hindu New Year. The day is celebrated under the name of Ugadi in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Baisakhi is the name given to the Hindu New Year celebrations in Punjab. The Hindus of Kashmir celebrate this day as Navrey, while the Sindhis mark this day as Cheti Chandi. In West Bengal, this event is known as Poila Baishakh and is celebrated with much joy and love.

No matter what the name, the celebrations, fun, frolic, and the concept of feast remain the same, nonetheless.
